Netherlands Soccer Team 2022 Captain: Virgil Van Dijk
Van Dijk had competed for the Netherlands in international youth competitions at the under-19 and under-21 levels. In 2015, he made his senior international debut for the Netherlands, and in March 2018, he fully acquired the national team's captaincy. In the 1978 World Cup finals, they finished second in the group behind Peru.
In the 1990 edition, the Netherlands failed to win a single match and managed just two goals during the group stage. The Netherlands fell to eventual champions Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 1994 tournament, eliminating them from the competition. The Netherlands qualified for the 1998 semifinals after finishing first in their group with five points, where they again fell to the Brazilians.
The Netherlands reached the round of 16 in 2006, where they fell to Portugal by a solitary goal. Seven yellow cards were issued to the Netherlands. In 2010, the team qualified for the knockout stage by finishing atop Group E. In the finals, they took on Spain. Unfortunately, they failed to win the trophy again.
With victories over Spain, Australia, and Chile, the Netherlands took first place in Group B in 2014. After defeating the tournament's hosts Brazil 3-0 in the third-place playoff, the Netherlands won bronze.
