The former captain of the Indian national team, Virat Kohli, is a right-handed batsman for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. The IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him for $30,000 on a youth contract. In the 2013 edition, Kohli averaged 45.28 and hit 634 runs at a strike rate of over 138. This included six fifties and a top score of 99, and he finished as the season's third-highest run-scorer.
In the following season, Kohli made 359 runs at 27.61, leading Bangalore to finish in seventh position. He worked wonders with the bat in the 2015 IPL, catapulting his team to the playoffs. He secured the fifth position on the season's leading run-getters list with 505 runs. He had an average of 45.90 and a strike rate of more than 130.
Cut to the 2016 IPL, and RCB finished runners-up, with Kohli breaking the record for most runs in an IPL season, scoring 973 runs in 16 matches at an average of 81.08. He won the and Most-valuable Player Award of Vivo IPL 2016. Having scored four centuries in the tournament, he also became the first player to reach the 4000-run milestone in the IPL. In October 2016, at the launch event of his biography, 'Driven: The Virat Kohli Story' in New Delhi, Kohli announced that RCB would be the IPL franchise he would permanently play for.
In the 2018 season, RCB retained Kohli for a price of ₹170 million (US$2.3 million). This was the highest price at which any player was bought that year. Having scored 530 runs in the season, he was the first batsman to score over 500 runs in 5 different seasons. On 28 March 2019, Kohli emerged as the second player to reach 5000 IPL runs after Suresh Raina. The same season added one more feather to his cap when he surpassed Raina to become the leading runs scorer in IPL; he scored 84 runs in a match against KKR.
On 22 April 2021, Kohli became the first-ever player to reach 6000 IPL Runs in a match against . Virat Kohli revealed ahead of the commencement of the 14th edition that this would be his final season as RCB Captain. His captaincy in the tournament has been questioned repeatedly as RCB's performance hasn't been great, especially in the last few years. In the 2022 IPL season, he was replaced by Faf du Plessis as the team captain. In the upcoming 16th edition of the IPL, Plessis will again be the team captain.
