Serbia has competed under various Yugoslav national teams since the breakup of SFR Yugoslavia and its football team in 1992. The team has had significant success, finishing fourth in the 1930 and 1962 World Cups. Due to the countries' new names, Serbia participated as Serbia and Montenegro between February 2003 and June 2006. After a referendum in 2006, Montenegro declared its independence. It created separate football federations and eventually renamed the team as the sovereign Serbia national football team. Following the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia has played as an independent nation since 2006, and qualified for the World Cup in 2010 and 2018.
FIFA and UEFA consider Serbia as the official successor of both the national football teams of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia/SFR Yugoslavia and the FR Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro.

Tadić plays as a forward or attacking midfielder. He is the captain of the Serbia national team and Eredivisie club Ajax. Since his international debut in 2008, he has earned 90 caps for Serbia.
In 2008, a 20-year-old Tadić was first named to the Serbian national team. He didn't establish himself as a regular squad member until 2011. Serbia's football team was a member of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from the 1930 FIFA World Cup to the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Then, from the 1950 FIFA World Cup to the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Serbia was a member of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, both of which participated in the world cup.
Serbia and Montenegro played together from the FIFA World Cup in 1994 to the FIFA World Cup in 2006. Players such as Mateja Kezman, Nikola Zigic, and Daniel Ljuboja have represented the team in the game. But with only one win in three group games.
