Portugal made its first appearance in a major football tournament in 1966, at the FIFA World Cup in England. The team defeated North Korea 5-3 in the last eight of the World Cup to progress to the semi-finals for the first time in their history. However, England ended Portugal's memorable debut at the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium in the semi-finals.
After missing four World Cups in 1970, 1974, 1978, and 1982, Portugal's national football team qualified for the 1986 FIFA World Cup, held in Mexico. However, they finished last in Group F and were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage.
At their third FIFA World Cup appearance, held in South Korea and Japan in 2002, they only advanced to the Group stage. Portugal reached the semi-finals in 2006, but France defeated the team 1-0 in their semi-final match. The 2010 FIFA World Cup marked Portugal's fifth appearance in the tournament. Spain beat Portugal in Round 16 to conclude their campaign in South Africa. In the 2014 edition, the team was eliminated at the Group stage.
In 2018, Ronaldo led the Portugal football team in Group B, including Spain, Iran, and Morocco, during their seventh FIFA World Cup appearance in Russia. Portugal finished second in Group B with five points from three matches, qualifying for the Round of 16. Portugal was eliminated from the tournament after losing 1-2 to Uruguay in the pre-quarterfinals.
