Mankading in cricket is a term, that received a lot of attention from cricketers. Even after it is made as a law, people still treat it as “unsportsmanshiplike”.
Let’s understand what is Mankading, is it acceptable, popular moments of Mankading in cricket and the reasons for the controversies associated with this most sensation and controversial rule.
What is Mankading in Cricket?
Mankading is a form of run out. However, the ball is not bowled yet. It may sound confusing, so let’s make it simpler.
- The bowler is running to bowl a delivery.
- The batter on the non-striker’s end gets outside the popping crease.
- The bowler stops bowling and takes off the bails, before delivering the ball.
The non-striker will be given out, and this event is known as Mankading.
Where does the word “Mankading” come from?
Vinoo Mankad, a famous player from India, is said to be the first person to attempt this type of run out. This technique of dismissal is named after him.
- The word “mankading” was first used by the Australian press.
- During India’s tour of Australia in 1947, Vinoo Mankad dismissed Bill Brown by removing the stumps twice when Brown was outside the crease.
- The umpire signalled out.
Even though Don Bradman, who was serving as captain of Australia at the time, came out in support of Mankad, the Australian press criticized him for his lack of sportsmanlike conduct. Following this occurrence, there were other changes made to the Rules of Cricket.
Is Mankading in Cricket Acceptable?
The International Cricket Council (ICC) modified the playing circumstances and provided clarity on the rule.
- The ICC shifted Mankading from the “unfair play” section to the “run out” section on October 1, 2022.
- It doesn’t talk about the Spirit of the Game, as following the rules per se is uploading the Game Spirit.
The MCC Law specifies, “The non-striker is liable to be run out if at any point between the time the ball comes into play and the time the bowler would usually have been anticipated to release the ball, the non-striker is out of his/her ground.”
“In these conditions, the non-striker is run out if he or she is out of his or her ground when his or her wicket is laid down by the bowler hurling the ball at the stumps or by the spinner’s hand holding the ball, regardless of whether the ball is immediately delivered,” the rule states.
So, Mankading in Cricket is acceptable by law.
